What Makes This Recipe Great

I don’t know about you, but my family gathers for everything, and I’m always trying to figure out fun, simple snack options that everyone will love! Since it’s always the season of gathering and eating together, it’s a must to have a few easy recipes on hand to make for the masses! Enter Spicy Seasoned Pretzels! These are not your regular old pretzels, I promise!

Whether it’s a long car ride, a camping trip, a family vacation, or a game day– this is the perfect salty snack that is a great addition to any event. These “crack pretzels” are a family favorite! A great snack for a big group or even a cozy movie night. They taste similar to Chex Mix but even more addicting.

Coated in avocado oil or olive oil and seasoned with cayenne pepper, garlic salt, and lemon pepper, this spicy seasoned pretzel recipe is the perfect way to jazz up plain pretzels in no time.

Ingredient Notes

Such an easy recipe– These seasoned pretzels call for simple ingredients and a ziplock bag! That’s it! You can always adjust the seasonings to your liking– whether it’s a ranch packet or onion powder– you really can’t go wrong!

  • Tiny Twist Pretzels: Pick whichever bag of pretzels is your favorite. To make these seasoned pretzels gluten-free, be sure to pick gluten-free pretzels. I prefer pretzel twists or pretzel sticks, but you can use any shape of pretzel you want.
  • Garlic Salt: If you don’t have garlic salt, you can substitute 1 teaspoon garlic powder and 1 teaspoon salt.
  • Cayenne Pepper: To control the spice level, increase or decrease the cayenne pepper. This recipe is for a milder pretzel.
  • Lemon Pepper: Lemon pepper is pretty easy to find and such a staple to have on hand. It really jazzes up these spicy pretzels, not to mention chicken, mac & cheese (trust me!), and tons of other dishes.
  • Avocado Oil: I prefer using avocado oil for my spicy pretzel recipe. I try and avoid melted butter, vegetable oil, and canola oil, but those would work as well—same quantity.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Easy Spicy Seasoned Pretzels Recipe (The BEST!) | Tastes Lovely (5)
  1. Pour the oil and spices into a Ziptop gallon size bag. Seal and shake to evenly combine the oil with spices.
  2. Add in the pretzels, seal up the Ziploc bag, and gently shake to coat the pretzels.
  3. Allow the pretzels to soak up the seasoned oil mixture for at least 6 hours, or ideally for 24 hours. Turn the bag to shake up pretzels every few hours. No need to bake them; the spicy pretzels will soak up all the oil.
  4. You can also spread the seasoned pretzels on a baking sheet and allow them to soak, but I prefer the Ziploc back so they’re already stored and make much less of a mess!
  5. Serve right out of the bag or in a large bowl, and enjoy this delicious treat!

The Ultimate Seasoning for Pretzels

I had never heard of making seasoning for pretzels before this recipe. Typically, I’ve just eaten hard pretzels on their own, and they’re good…but then all of a sudden, my mouth is dry, and I’m completely sick of them!

Lemon Pepper + Cayenne Pepper + Garlic Salt is truly the ultimate seasoning mixture for pretzels. Some people use dry Hidden Valley ranch dressing mix or dry ranch seasoning mix, but I like the hint of spice in this seasoned pretzel recipe.

It’s salty, tangy, and mildly spicy. A flavor-packed spicy pretzel with every single bite! The oil coating keeps them from feeling so dry, and I never get sick of them! Truly the perfect snack!

Expert Tips

  • Spice Level: These spicy pretzels are mild. Feel free to use even less cayenne pepper if you don’t want them spicy at all. When making for my kids, I only use 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper. You can also use more to taste if you want your spicy pretzel recipe spicier.

Storage Tips

  • Store these seasoned pretzels in a Ziploc bag or airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.

Recipe FAQs

Do these spicy seasoned pretzels leave oil residue on your hands?

Barely- honestly, no more than a bag of potato chips. One great thing about this spicy pretzel recipe is that the oil soaks into the pretzels, and they’re not greasy at all!

How many calories are in spicy pretzels?

One serving of this recipe is about 17 pretzels and has 369 calories.

What can I dip my spicy pretzels in?

While this spicy pretzel recipe is great on its own, these actually are SO good dipped in plain cream cheese! When we go camping, we always have cream cheese on hand for bagels, and the creamy dip mixed with the spicy pretzel makes an amazing combination.

could I substitute butter spray Instead of oil to keep the calories down?

    • Natalie February 7, 2022 @ 7:55 pm Reply

I’m not sure it will soak in as much? But it may allow the seasoning to stick to the pretzel. I’ve never tried this, but worth a try!

This recipe is amazing! The only change that I made was to use 2 bags of pretzels. I like to use the waffle pretzels from Dollar Tree. So easy and inexpensive to make.

FAQs

Why do my pretzels taste metallic? ›

Why do my pretzels have a metallic taste? If your pretzel bites have a metallic taste, this could be from the baking soda in the boiling step (don't skip this step, you need it!). You may want to try a different kind of baking soda (I use Arm & Hammer Baking Soda). But it could also be from your egg wash!

What are hard pretzel toppings? ›

In addition to dip, you can also add toppings to your pretzels. Common toppings include parmesan, cinnamon sugar, raisin, jalapeno, ranch, garlic, and almond crunch. While most of these toppings are added before baking, you can also add them after.

Can you bake store bought pretzels? ›

Oven Directions:

Pre-heat oven to 425°. Dampen pretzels with water. Sprinkle with salt. Bake approximately 12 – 15 minutes.

Can I refrigerate pretzel dough? ›

Let the dough rise: Clean out the bowl, film it with oil, and return the dough to the bowl. Cover and let rise somewhere warm until the dough is doubled in bulk, about 1 hour. → Make Ahead Tip: At this point, the pretzel dough can be refrigerated for up to three days or frozen for three months.

What is the secret ingredient which makes a pretzel taste like a pretzel? ›

Pretzels are dipped in food-grade lye before baking. It gives them a characteristic shine and flavor.

What is the secret ingredient in pretzels? ›

Traditional Bavarian pretzels are dipped in a lye solution before they are baked. Lye, also known as sodium hydroxide, is essentially the same stuff that's used to make soap and clean drains. It can even dissolve glass.

Are pretzels healthy? ›

Pretzels may be better than some fatty chips, but four out of five nutrition experts surveyed by Time say if you're trying to eat healthy, pretzels shouldn't be your go-to snack. Although pretzels are low-fat, they are also pretty paltry on the protein and fiber front, and they can be quite high in sodium and carbs.

What is the brown stuff on pretzels? ›

Lye is primarily used to make pretzels, and it's the reason for their unmistakable shiny, mahogany color. To prepare, shaped pretzels are dipped in a lye bath, then baked in the oven. This method can also be used with rolls or buns.

What's the difference between a pretzel and a soft pretzel? ›

Soft pretzels are large and have a chewy texture. They're usually served individually and are commonly sold at concession stands, restaurants, and bakeries. Meanwhile, hard pretzels are small and crunchy and can be eaten by the handful, depending on their shape.

What happens if you don't boil pretzels before baking? ›

Like bagels, pretzels are made in boiling water prior to baking to give them their snappy outsides and chewy insides (messy!). Soft pretzels must be boiled, or dipped in a baking soda bath (or lye if you're gusty and strict with your pretzel traditions).

How does Auntie Anne's cook their pretzels? ›

All those pretzels are made and twisted on the spot.

Auntie Anne's definitely doesn't serve pre-made pretzels! Every location receives shipments of the signature flour mixture, which is put in a mixer along with water and yeast. They're baked, brushed with real butter, salted and served right there.

Why do you boil pretzels before baking? ›

This bath essentially gelatinizes the outside of the pretzel, preventing it from fully “springing” during baking (as bread does) and giving pretzels their signature chewy crust. It also gives them their unique and indelible “pretzel” flavor.

Can I freeze pretzels? ›

Freezing pretzels

Most types of food can be frozen, and pretzels are one of them. Pretzels can last up to a month in the freezer. We recommend wrapping them in a double layer of plastic wrap or aluminum foil, and then placing them in a freezer-safe bag.

What does baking soda do to pretzels? ›

Like lye, baking soda is an alkaline substance, and when mixed with water and brushed over the pretzel dough, it changes the pH of the dough and gelates the surface starch. In the oven, the starch gel hardens and the alkaline baking soda makes browning happen fast.

What is a good dip for pretzels? ›

A classic pick is a beer cheese dip. Combine cheddar cheese, cream cheese for creaminess, and 1/2 to 3/4 cups of beer depending on if you're looking for a thinner or thicker dip. Or try this Gouda-infused version.

Why do my pretzels taste weird? ›

If your pretzels have any sort of a metallic, bitter taste, it all comes down to the baking soda bath.

Why does my food have a weird metallic taste? ›

Dysgeusia can be temporary or long-term, and it can be caused by factors such as medications, nutritional deficiencies, or hormonal changes. Another reason for a metallic taste is the interaction between certain metals, such as iron or copper, and food.

Why does my food have a metallic aftertaste? ›

Gum disease and poor oral hygiene are two likely reasons why you may be experiencing a metallic taste in your mouth. So are burning mouth syndrome and a mouth injury or recent oral surgery. Medication, vitamins, a food allergy, and sinus problems can also cause the unpleasant sensation.

What does it mean if food tastes like metal? ›

Indigestion. Heartburn, acid reflux, and indigestion could be responsible for a metallic taste. Other symptoms you get with these conditions are bloating and a burning feeling in your chest after eating. To treat the underlying problem, avoid rich foods, eat dinner earlier, and take antacids.
