MHS set up a one-yard run by Braden Smith on a 17-yard pass over the middle to Nick Poorman. That was after three five -yard penalties on the Greenwave. The Green Wave took their only lead of the game in the second quarter when they drove 82 yards in 11 plays. Smith completed a 15 -yard pass to Konour Smith and a 22-yarder to Alec Raboin.

Braden Smith made a four-yard touchdown pass to Konour Smith and Zachary Lenskink booted the extra point for a 13-6 lead with 9:47 left in the second. MIKE MONAHAN JG-TC Sports Writer MATTOON The non-conference football game at Gaines Field was 34-26 in favor Bethalto Civic Memorial with 9:32 left in the game. The Eagles just intercepted a Green Wave pass and had the ball at the MHS 28 when the game was postponed until 1 p.m. Saturday at MHS due to lightning. Bethalto led 34-20 and had a second and 10 when Reece Prior stepped in front of an Eagle pass and returned it 52 yards down the east sidelines.

The extra point was just wide, but Mattoon was within a point. Bethalto answered with a nine play, 77 yard drive with John Whitworth (who had 26 carries for 210 yards and two touchdowns when the game was stopped) picked up a gain of 12 and then 27 yards. Zach Williams had three carries for 24 yards before Whitworth moved the ball to the seven. The Mattoon defense came up big time and time again picking off three passes and recovering two fumbles, including one by Jacob Wood-yard in the Green Wave end zone. The Eagles had just one punt in the first three plus quarters and didn't get inside MHS territory on only one of its 13 drives.

With 6:09 left in the third quarter MHS 6-6 quarterback Braden Smith, who had thrown for 161 yards and two touchdowns, was injured and did not return. The first quarter took 40 minutes and there was a total of 15 penalties, two of which offset each other. A total of 106 yards in penalties were called in the first period, which, when the period ended, was all deadlocked at six. Mammoser was good on the point after attempt to push the score to 14-0. The Warriors showed signs of life when Ethan Lucas took the ensuing kick off and found enough blockers to hit daylight for an 84 yard touchdown. Andrew Orrell booted the extra point to narrow the lead to- 14-7. But Newton rallied right back on a 22 yard run by Kaleb Witgan to extend their lead to 20-7 at the end of the first. The Eagles defense pitched a shutout for the balance of the game but added 27 points in the final three quarter, a pair by Witgan, one more by Bierman and a 10 yard pass from Mammoser to Mitch Jansen to seal the win.

The Warriors stand 1-1 and will travel to Flora next week for another Little mini Conference match up. Newton improves to 2-0. Tonight we were the fly and we got splat," were the words of Casey-Westfield head coach Tom Monken after suffering his first loss as the Warriors head coach at the hands of the Newton Eagles at Sinclair-Vidoni Field by a final 47-7. "I am very disappointed in the effort we gave at the beginning of the game," Monken added. "But I was very pleased with the fight I saw out of this group in the second half.

We have to regroup, refocus and get back on track." The Warriors will be without the services of senior Corey Carver, who was ejected in the third quarter, and could be without quarterback Isaac Elkins and back Zac Campbell, who are questionable due to injuries. Newton took the opening kickoff and needed just two plays for Mitch Bierman to break through for a 68 yard touchdown run. Brock Mammoser booted the PAT for a 7-0 Newton lead at the 11:10 mark. On the Warriors first offensive series Elkins was looking for Carver, but Bierman had other ideas and picked off the pass for the first turnover of the night. Casey forced a fourth and seven and looked to have the Eagles stopped but a roughing the passer call against the Warriors moved the chains and gave Newton a new set of downs.

Vernon defense at Charleston High School in Charleston on Friday. Bad 2-minute stretch dooms Trojans against Mount Vernon quarterback keeper. Mount Vernon got the ball right back when the Rams caught Charleston off guard with an onside kick, but a couple of penalties stalled the drive and Mount Vernon punted. On Mount Vernon's next possession, the Rams faced a 2nd and 17, but Rush took a pitch and went 60 yards to the Trojans' 3 -yard line.

Rutherford scored two plays later on a 2-yard keeper. The two -point conversion made it 14-0. Rutherford finished with three touchdowns when he scored on a 3 -yard keeper with 11:37 left in the game. The Trojans offense started to show signs of life the second quarter. They drove to Mount Vernon's 43-yard line and on 4th and 9, the Rams jumped offsides and Kevin Frederick leaped over a player for a 6 -yard gain.

Later on 4th and 4 from the 11-yard line, Frederick ran through an open hole behind the right guard for an 11-yard score for Charleston. Rush ended the game with 195 yards on 10 carries. "He sparked us and he did that last week for us, too," Mount Vernon coach Jared Shaner said. "He's got a different gear that other kids don't have. He gets on the edge and you think you have a good angle on him and he gets past you." Then in the second play of the Trojans ensuing drive, quarterback Justin Wilson lost the ball while being pulled down for a sack.

Jesse Green scooped up the ball and returned it 17-yards for the score and a 28-6 lead. At the 1:51 mark, Gage Burroughs picked off Wilson and went 42 yards for the score to make it 34-6. "One of the big parts, in a close game, scoring those two defensive touchdowns before the half and it's always big to have that swing, deflating when you are on the offensive side of the ball," Shaner said. "But defensively it gives you so much energy." The Rams kept the ball away from the Trojans for most of the first quarter. Mount Vernon converted twice on fourth down and went 67 yards in 13 plays to take a 6-0 lead with 4:53 left in the first quarter.

Brandon Rutherford scored on a 1-yard JUSTIN RUST JG-TC Sports Writer CHARLESTON-Right when everything was starting to look up for the Charleston High School football team, it all spiraled out of control in a matter of 2 minutes. While the Trojans never led in the game, they put together a promising drive late in the second quarter. The 15-play, 70-yard drive cut Mount Vernon's lead to 14-6 with 3 minutes, 51 seconds remaining before halftime. Two minutes later, the Rams held a 34-6 lead on Charleston and the Rams won 40-6. The game was called early due to a lightning delay with 9:35 left in the contest.

"I would like to say it wasn't deflating, but it was," Charleston coach Tim Hogan said. "For some reason, we have to find a way to sustain drives and to score and to sustain momentum. "We got momentum back there. We have to find ways to not give up momentum. Offense, defense, special teams, we all had times tonight where we lost focus." Two plays after Charleston cut into the Rams' lead, Mount Vernon's Jailon Rush broke free for a 53-yard touchdown run and the two-point conversion made it 22-6.

Illini game postponed TROJANSB2 35th annual Mattoon volleyball invite today television. Ticket stubs from Friday will be honored today. Parking will be free. For a while, the delay involved more than just lightning. The skies opened and rain pounded down, sometimes blowing sideways, pelting an empty stadium as fans huddled in the covered concourses or raced for their vehicles.

There's no way to know what kind of a crowd Illinois would have had for the season opener, although a nice group turned out to-christen the opening of Grange Grove, through which the Illini team marched on their way into the stadium. That was at 5:40 and it the sun was blazing. But 90 minutes later a storm barreled in and turned a party into a puddle. Friday was supposed to signal a ray of hope, an evening of fun, excitement and relief.
