What do the colors mean on magic seaweed? ›

On MSW, wind direction is indicated by an arrow (direction of where the wind is coming from). The strength is then clearly indicated numerically and also colour coded (green for light, offshore wind and and red for strong, onshore wind) so it makes for super easy reading.

Ho'okipa Beach Park is one of the top spots for ocean sports and recreation in Maui. Located at Mile #9 on Hâna Highway (36), this breath-taking white sand beach boasts some of the best waves on the Maui coastline.

Wave height on Magicseaweed tells you the what height wave to expect at the beach. Swell Period tells you how powerful the waves will be and affects the size. Generally surfable conditions are 9 seconds + (for the UK). Look for no wind or light wind on the forecast that's preferably offshore!

What colors? Bursts of green, red and vermilion, orange and brown. It is a characteristic that defines the three main types of seaweeds: the chlorophytes (greens), rhodophytes (red) and ochrophytes (brown).

Though the word ho'okipa means to entertain or host, if you drop the prefix “ho'o,” you end up with the word kipa which means to visit.

Swimming & Playing

On the Pavilions side there are small areas of sandy-bottom ocean with sheltered swimming, and there are also often small tidepools running the length of the middle of the beach that keiki love to play in. Casual swimmers rarely venture beyond the shallow margins of the shoreline.

You can spot up to 15-20 turtles napping on the sandy shore at any one time. Afternoons seem to be the best time of day for turtle watching, but you'll probably see at least a few on the beach in the morning, too. Ho'okipa Beach Park is open from 5:30 AM to 7:00 PM every day.

East of Hoʻokipa, you'll find Maui's most famous surf spot for big wave surfing: Peʻahi, also known as "Jaws.” During big swells, surfers are towed into Peʻahi's massive waves by jet-skis.

Consequently, the north facing shores during the winter months can see waves of up to 30 feet. At certain breaks such as Peahi (aka “Jaws”), the waves can grow to over 70 feet during the largest swells of winter. At breaks such as Honolua Bay on the northwestern coastline of the island, 20 ft.

Located on the North Shore of Maui, Jaws is the biggest, heaviest, gnarliest wave in Hawaii. Winter storms bring waves as big as 100+ feet, creating insane conditions for the brave souls who paddle out.

The red macroalgae normally grow at the greatest depths, typically as far as 30 meters down, the green macroalgae thrive in shallow water, and the brown algae in between.
