This article will explain the diagnostic mode of this Maytag washing machine model and how you can employ it to solve problems on your machine.

Maytag Washer Diagnostic Mode: What Exactly Is It?

It’s always a great idea to put your washing machine in diagnostic mode when it malfunctions because it makes troubleshooting easier.

It’s a self-test mode programmed on the machine to identify and, in some cases, fix the problem. It gives users control over how to troubleshoot problems. When the engine is faulty or stops working, users can employ the machine to pinpoint the problem source rather than finding it manually.

The diagnostic mode runs numerous tests on different parts of the machine to check their working condition. It tests the crucial parts consecutively to determine if they are working efficiently. If it discovers a problem with parts, it displays an error code to inform the user.

The user can then interpret the error code and complete the troubleshooting step accordingly. This feature is an upgrade to the traditional method of troubleshooting because it directs you to the exact location of the problem. So, it saves time and energy, and it also eliminates the risk of diagnosing wrong components.

The diagnostic mode can also be employed when you suspect a problem with the machine. It’s not necessary that the machine malfunctions before you can use it.

Starting The Diagnostic Mode On Maytag MVWX655DW1

The diagnostic mode is one of the easiest methods of detecting the problems and errors that cause the washer to malfunction or stop working. It can also be a factory reset to your machine and clear its errors. Below is the step-by-step guide on how to run the diagnostic mode on your Maytag washer:

  • Set the washer to Standby mode
  • Locate the control knob or dial. Turn it to adjust the position, ensuring it’s facing the top position or the part labeled normal
  • Unplug your washer and allow it to rest for about 10 seconds so it can reset all previous modes
  • Replug it and spin the knob 360° counterclockwise if any lights are switched on
  • Set the dial to face the part labeled Normal/Regular
  • Turn the dial clockwise(right) three clicks
  • Turn it counterclockwise one click and then clockwise one click
  • This process will flash the cycle status lights except for the lid locked
  • Rotate the knob clockwise one click.
  • The system will now be in error code mode. You can confirm it when the “done light” lights up.
  • Click on the Start button, and all lights should flash. The machine is in diagnostic mode at this stage
  • If you turn the knob clockwise one click now, the machine will be ready to display previous error codes.
  • Each turn of the knob in the clockwise direction will display an error code.

However, if only the first light flashes, no error codes are stored.

Before moving ahead to start the automatic diagnostic mode, you should clear the previously stored error codes as follows:

  • Follow the guides above till you reach the stage where the machine is ready to display the previous error codes
  • Turn the dial five clicks to the right
  • Press the Start button

The error codes and the machine itself will now reset. When the reset is complete, you can now start the automatic self-test mode.

How To Enter The Automatic Self-Test Mode

  • Set the control dial to point to the 12 o’clock position. The position is usually labeled Normal
  • Clear all previous modes by unplugging the machine for about 10 seconds before replugging it
  • If any indicator lights are on, spin the control dial 360° to the left
  • Now set the dial to point to the Regular/Normal direction
  • Rotate the dial clockwise three clicks
  • Rotate it again counterclockwise one click and finally clockwise one click
  • The cycle status will flash. Now rotate it clockwise two clicks again

The machine is now in automatic self-test mode. Let the process run independently. If you want to jump between the test and run it manually, you can use the Start button to skip any test.

During the process, if the test discovers a problem, it will display an error code. The machine will give the error code in two sections: F and E sections. Once you interpret the code, you’ll understand what to troubleshoot in your washer. You can visit your owner’s manual if unsure how to interpret the code.
