Air Fryer Sweet Potato Cubes

You probably want to know what the story is behind these air fryer sweet potato cubes. After all, us Milner’s have been air frying for a decade and you probably want to know when we started this air fryer sweet potato obsession.

Well, it was when we started complaining about sweet potatoes. How much we hate it when you get stuck with small sweet potatoes out of season, or how they are a terrible shape, so you can’t possibly use them for air fryer sweet potato fries.

For something quick, we took these terrible shaped sweet potatoes, peeled them, and cut them into cubes. We then air fried them with some air fryer frozen chicken breast and guess what?

The sweet potato cubes were amazing. It then started a thing in the Milner house. Whether it was cooked in the air fryer, the instant pot, or the slow cooker, this is how sweet potatoes out of season was enjoyed by our family.

Then when we went camping with our Instant Pot for 8 weeks, we did cubed sweet potatoes a LOT just because it was easy and we could make a yummy sweet potato hash for breakfast.

Fast forward a few years and sweet potato cubes is up there with my most cooked air fryer recipes.

In fact, as I write this recipe up for you today, I have just finished eating sweet potato cubes for lunch. They were served with our air fryer shrimp fajitas and dipped in my favourite paleo mayonnaise.

Can You Air Fry Sweet Potatoes?

Absolutely! Though don’t feel like it is limited to just air fryer sweet potato chunks. You could so sweet potato fries, sweet potato cubes, roasted sweet potatoes, baked sweet potatoes and the list goes on and on.

You could even use the air fryer to reheat your sweet potato mash!

Air Fryer Roasted Sweet Potatoes

You can also use this recipe we are sharing today to make air fryer roasted sweet potatoes. Just prep your sweet potato chunks bigger and you have roasted ready to be cooked in the air fryer.

They add 5 more minutes onto the cook time and you are sorted.

You can also go smaller too and instead of making big sweet potato cubes you can do small chunks. Then do the opposite and reduce the cook time by 5 minutes.

Though, whether you go with cubes, chunks or roasted, the taste and texture is the same, its just choosing what size you are cooking.

Make Ahead Air Fryer Sweet Potato Cubes

Earlier this year I found myself getting into meal prep. Until that moment I never thought meal prep was for me. But suddenly needing to get lunch done fast, made me want to do it.

What I started doing was prepping a big bag of sweet potatoes, seasoning them, adding extra virgin olive oil, mixing them, and then placing them in the fridge.

Then at lunch time there was no meal prep, just sweet potatoes loaded straight into the air fryer and air fried.

You can do this too.

Below is a picture of me meal prepping sweet potatoes and other veggies to for the week ahead.

How Long To Air Fry Sweet Potato Cubes?

This depends on how big your sweet potato cubes are.

Super small sweet potato chunks can cook in 8 minutes. Whilst your average sized sweet potato cubes will need 13 minutes. But if you are cooking air fryer roast potatoes then you will need an 18 minute cook time.

Though our air fryer sweet potato cubes are slightly smaller than roasted potatoes and take JUST 17 minutes to air fry.

Notes

Seasonings. You can mix and match your seasonings depending on what you are serving with your sweet potatoes. For example, I love sage and mixed herbs if serving the sweet potatoes with a roast dinner.

Crispy. If the sweet potato cubes are not crispy enough, then I recommend an olive oil spray bottle and giving your sweet potatoes a spray when changing the temperature.

FAQs

Why soak sweet potatoes before air frying? ›

If you'd like, you can soak the sweet potato slices for 30 minutes up to 2 hours before frying to remove excess starch. Personally, though, going through this step didn't make a real difference for my fries. Peels on or off — it's up to you!

How much time should sweet potatoes be in the air fryer? ›

Faster Than The Oven.

Sweet potatoes take 40 to 50 minutes to bake in the air fryer at 370 degrees F, compared to 50 to 65 minutes (or longer) in the oven (check out How to Bake a Sweet Potato). Use that time to whip up a fast, easy main like Pan Fried Chicken Breast.

Why are sweet potatoes soggy in air fryer? ›

If your air fryer fries are soggy, it is likely because you over-crowded them in the basket. The sweet potatoes steam when crowded together, instead of air frying. For the best, most crispy results, cook the fries in a single layer so that the air has room to circulate.

Why soak potatoes before air frying? ›

While it may seem like a pain, soaking the potatoes in hot water for 10 minutes prior to cooking them in the air fryer is essential. The water removes excess starch, allowing the fries to be their crispiest. Instead of soaking them in large bowl of cold water, I like to use hot water to cook the potatoes slightly.

What happens if you don't soak sweet potatoes? ›

However, when it comes to using soaking as a means to prevent oxidation, it's unnecessary to soak sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes can be diced or peeled, and stored in the refrigerator for several days without changing color. White and yellow potatoes, on the other hand, will oxidize much easier.

What happens if you don't soak potatoes before frying? ›

The main reasons to cut the potatoes and pre-soak in water are: To allow the excess starches and sugars to be removed from the outer surface of the fry strips AND to keep the potatoes from browning prematurely from exposure to air. Covering in water helps the potato from turning a dark color.

Why do sweet potatoes turn black in air fryer? ›

Why do my air fryer sweet potato fries turn black? Sweet potatoes contain a higher concentration of sugar than standard potatoes, and caramelize as they cook in the air fryer. If you find the fries are darkening too quickly or deeply, cook at a lower temperature, or for a shorter period of time.

Can you put foil in an air fryer? ›

The great news about air fryers is that you can use foil along with parchment paper to cook your food in an air fryer. Just remember that if it's safe and effective to use in a conventional oven, it will work just fine in an air fryer.

How do I keep potatoes from sticking in my air fryer? ›

GREASE THE FRYER BASKET

Yes, even if your food doesn't require oil, always take a few seconds to grease it. In addition, you can do this either by rubbing or spraying a little vegetable oil on the lower racks. The goal is to ensure that your food does not stick to the appliance tray and maintains even cooking.

Why are my potatoes still hard in the air fryer? ›

Not preheating the air fryer

Air fryers might not serve quite the same function as a traditional oven, but they have a fair amount of crossover in how they operate. For instance, preheating your air fryer much the same way you'd preheat your oven might be the secret to ensuring a crispy, savory potato.

Can you eat sweet potato skin? ›

You can eat sweet potato skin. It's a good source of fiber, a nutrient that may help lower the risk of heart disease and keep you feeling full for longer periods of time. The next time you make a sweet potato dish, whether it's a roasted side dish or a hearty, cozy casserole, leave the peel on.

Why are my French fries not crispy in the air fryer? ›

It's essential that you spread the potatoes in a single layer in the air fryer basket and that you leave a little space between each one. If they're too crowded, the potatoes will steam inside the air fryer, and they won't get crispy. In order to give them adequate space, you'll likely need to work in batches.

Can you put salt in an air fryer? ›

Oil: Use a neutral vegetable oil suitable for high heat. I use sunflower oil. Salt: Make sure to add the salt AFTER air frying. It does really affect the crispiness in this particular recipe.

Should you soak sweet potatoes before cooking? ›

TIPS & TRICKS to Make this Recipe: The main secrets to achieving that incredible crispy texture, is to soak the cut sweet potatoes in cold water for at least 30 minutes. This helps remove the starch from the sweet potatoes so they´re not limp & soggy.

Should I soak sweet potatoes before baking? ›

Place all your wedges into a bowl of cold water, give them a swish around with your hand and allow them to soak for at least 30mins, but the longer the better. This will pull out the starch from the potato and prevent them from going gloopy in the centre once baked. Drain away water and thoroughly dry the wedges.

Does soaking sweet potato help? ›

The only time I find soaking beneficial is when making sweet potato fries. If you soak the cut sweet potatoes, then do a two step frying process (parboil them before frying a second time) you get a crisper fry. If you skip the soaking stage, they don't get as crisp.
