BEST INGREDIENTS FOR A HORMONE BALANCING SMOOTHIE: FOOD, HERBS, POWDERS & MORE

Smoothies for Hormone Balance: Complete Guide with Recipes & Tips (2)

The basic ingredients that you need for a hormone-balancing smoothie are:

Liquid baseplain water, coconut water, green tea or plant-based milk.
Fruitsbananas, berries, avocados or any others you like.
Greensspinach, kale, wheatgrass, matcha and so on.
Natural fatsnut or seed butters, avocados.
Herbs (optional)cinnamon, ginger, turmeric, maca and so on.
Natural sweeteners (optional)dates, raw honey, pure, maple syrup.
Green powder (optional)this Green Juice powder is a favorite.

As for the quantities to use, the guidelines below will give you about 16 ounces of smoothie:

  • 1/2 cup liquid.
  • 1.5 cups fruit
  • 1 cup tightly packed leafy greens
  • 1 tablespoon of nut butter.
  • 1 – 2 tablespoons total of raw seeds/nuts and powders.
  • Herbs and spices to taste.

Remember that the above measurements are a general guideline. The final consistency of your smoothie depends on whether you use fresh vs. frozen ingredients,

In addition, if you use ingredients that have a high water content (such as oranges, watermelons or cucumbers) that will also affect how thick or thin your smoothie turns out.

Now let’s take a closer look at each of the ingredients you need to make a tasty and effective smoothie for your hormones.

1. Liquid Base

Although plain water works well as a liquid, you can increase your smoothie’s nutritional power by using ingredients like coconut water or even, green tea.

And of course, you can also use plant-based milks like almond, hemp, coconut or oat milk.

2. Fruits

Fruits serve two purposes in a smoothie:

  • First, they add natural sweetness, so that you don’t have to load the smoothie with artificial sweeteners.
  • They provide vitamins, trace minerals, antioxidants and more that the body needs to detox so that it can find its natural hormonal balance.

One thing to note is that you’ll get the most out of fruits when they’re ripe because they are more alkalizing.

Here are some fruit suggestions for your hormone-balancing smoothie:

  • Bananas
  • Mangoes
  • Pineapples
  • Papayas
  • Peaches
  • Berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and so on)
  • Kiwi

3. Greens

Whether they come from the sea (like spirulina) or from the soil (like spinach or moringa) leafy greens are a must for effective hormone balance.

But what is that makes greens so effective at healing the body?

It has to do with the fact that they are high in chlorophyll!

Chlorophyll detoxes and oxygenates the body. The more oxygen we have, the more alkaline the body is!

Having the right level of alkalinity means that all systems in the body function optimally 🙂

The most popular leafy greens for a hormone-balancing smoothie include:

  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Matcha
  • Wheatgrass
  • Moringa
  • Spirulina
  • Chlorella

4. Herbs and Spices

Herbs like maca, ashwagandhaand turmeric are known to help the body adapt to stress and combat inflammation.

Adding them to your hormone-balancing smoothie will give your body that extra kick it needs to reset!

Here are some other hormone-friendly herbs/spices you can use in a smoothie:

  • Maca
  • Ashwagandha
  • Mint
  • Cinnamon
  • Ginger
  • Turmeric

5. Healthy Fats

As mentioned in this article on hormone balancing fats, there are 5 categories of hormones that need fat for their production.

If we don’t have enough fat, we simply can’t balance those hormones.

So, adding healthy fats to your smoothie is another effective strategy for boosting your results.

Some healthy fats to consider:

  • Seeds (ground flax seeds, chia seeds, hemp seeds)
  • Nut milks (almond milk, hemp milk, coconut milk and so on)
  • Peanut butter
  • Almond butter
  • Coconut oil or coconut butter
  • Sunflower butter

Note: if you use nut milks as your liquid base, then you don’t necessarily have to add in another fat.

6. Natural Sweeteners

Sometimes you need to add some sweetness to your healthy smoothie!

When the need arises, skip the processed cane sugar and reach for natural sweeteners like raw honey or dates.

Here are some sweeteners for your smoothie:

  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • Vanilla extract
  • Dates
  • Raw honey
  • Pure maple syrup

7. Green Powder

A nutrient-rich superfood powder serves two very important purposes.

First, it floods the body with nutrients.

Second, it provides convenience because it contains a very wide variety of foods that would be difficult to eat in one go.

It takes A LOT of nutrients to restore hormonal balance.

You would need to eat tons of fruits and veggies all day, for months on end to really saturate your body with the amount of nutrients that it needs.

A concentrated superfood powder is designed to be a convenient shortcut and timesaver!

There are tons of food powders on the market and you can go crazy experimenting with various brands.

Not to mention you’ll lose time and money hopping from one brand to another!

HOW SMOOTHIES CAN HELP WITH HORMONAL IMBALANCE SYMPTOMS

1. Convenient Way To Eat More Fruits and Veggies

According to a 2017 report, only 9 percent of adult Americans eat enough fruits and veggies every day.

That means 91% of us DON’T eat enough fruits and veggies on daily basis!

Holy wow!!!

Given that whole fruits and veggies are packed with the nutrients we need, it’s no wonder that hormone imbalance conditions are on the rise.

Whether it’s PCOS, fibroids, PMS, hot flashes, adrenal fatigue, hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, women are struggling with all sorts of debilitating symptoms these days.

By incorporating smoothies into your daily routine, you can get your fruits and veggies much more easily, even when you don’t have time to sit down and eat!

2. Provides Fiber

Because smoothies are usually packed with fruits, veggies and nuts, they are a great source of fiber!

Fiber is essential for regular bowel movements, which is essential for eliminating harmful waste (which can disrupt hormones) from the body.

3. Supports A Healthy Immune System

Your immune system doesn’t just fight off viruses, bacteria and other bad guys.

It also plays a role in regulating hormones!

So, when you drink a healthy, immune-boosting smoothie, you are also taking a critical step towards eradicating hormone imbalance symptoms.

The immune system is a reflection of our overall health and that means every system in the body, including the endocrine system, is affected by it.

Whether you are struggling with fertility issues, vagin*l dryness, or insomnia, strengthening the immune system is necessary for ultimate recovery!

4. Helps Restore Healthy Gut Bacteria

As I mentioned above, the immune system plays a role in hormone production and hormone regulation.

It just so happens that about 70% to 80% of our immune system lies in the gut.

This means that overall gut health, and having a healthy balance of gut bacteria, is critical for hormone balance.

And this is where smoothies help a lot!

You see, smoothies contain raw ingredients that are full of prebiotics.

So when you drink a smoothie, the prebiotics from the fruits and veggies are converted into the probiotics (i.e. the good bacteria) that the body needs.

This allows your gut, immune and endocrine systems to all be in harmony!

By the way, for more gut health tips, read this post on this link between gut health and hormone balance.

5. Reduces Cravings

Does it seem like your food cravings just take over your body and you can’t control them?

Well, that’s because your food cravings are strongly driven by the microbes that live inside of you!

You see, those microbes – specifically, the gut bacteria – crave certain foods.

And certain foods increase the quantities of specific types of bacteria.

Here’s what I mean:

  • the more junk food we eat, the more we populate the gut with bacteria that love junk food. And therefore, those bacteria drive us to eat more junk food (which is often full of hormone-disrupting ingredients!).
  • On the other hand, the more healthy food we eat, the more we populate the gut with bacteria that love veggies. And therefore, those bacteria drive us to eat more healthy foods.

Yes, it’s all very interconnected!

And you can influence this web by drinking hormone-balancing smoothies that are full of fruits, veggies and healthy fats.

6. Boosts Energy

When you have any kind of hormone imbalance, fatigue and low energy usually show up as symptoms.

That’s because hormone imbalance usually results from toxins and chronic inflammation.

These toxins and inflammation place a lot of stress on the body, which eventually wears you down.

Smoothies are excellent for counteracting this and boosting your energy levels.

7. Hydrates The Skin From The Inside Out

Chronic or cystic acne, as well as dry skin and other skin conditions, are strongly tied to toxins and chronic inflammation.

By drinking smoothies for hormone balance that are full of antioxidants and cleaning nutrients, the skin is easily nourished.

As the internal inflammation reduces, the surface of the skin also becomes less inflamed, resulting in healthier, glowing skin.

8. Supports Weight Loss

Leptin, ghrelin and insulin are some of the hormones that control when we eat, how much we eat and how much fat we store.

However, whenever there is any form of hormone imbalance, these “hunger” hormones are usually off balance too.

So, by simply consuming smoothies for hormone balance we can regulate these hormones and shed excess pounds naturally.

This is a far easier option than relying on willpower or gimmicky diets that don’t produce lasting results!

9. Supports Bone Health

Most of the minerals we need – like calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and so on – are stored in our bones.

However, when the body becomes full of toxins or is inflamed, the stores of minerals in the bones eventually becomes depleted.

So not only, do we end up with symptoms of hormone imbalance, but we also lose bone density.

In addition, we increase our risk for conditions like osteoporosis.

By drinking smoothies that include green veggies, we take in calcium and vitamin K, both of which work together to maintain healthy bones.

10. Supports Detoxification

We can’t talk about the benefits of drinking smoothies for hormone balance, without mentioning the fact that smoothies are great for detoxification.

Smoothies provide gentle, everyday detoxing because of the fiber, enzymes and antioxidants that they contain.

Whether you use smoothies as a meal replacement or you take them in addition to your meals, you reap the rewards!

CONCLUSION

A hormone-balancing doesn’t have to be complicated. All you need are a few whole foods (and a green powder, if you choose).

I hope this post has given you some ideas to keep you inspired as you add these delicious drinks to your diet!
