Woolworths Lunch Counter Ham Salad Recipe (2024)

Ingredients

1 slice baked ham, 1 in. and diced * shopping list
1/4 cup celery, finely diced shopping list
sweet pickle relish shopping list
salad dressing (not mayonnaise), as needed shopping list
salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste shopping list
4 slices whole wheat bread, toasted shopping list
2 lettuce leaves shopping list
potato chips shopping list

How to make it

* It is important to dice ham..DO NOT chop or grind it
Add celery, then add enough pickle relish and salad dressing to suit taste
Season to taste with salt and pepper
Mix well
Spread ham salad onto two of the toasted whole wheat bread
Top with lettuce
Place last toast slices on top
Cut each sandwich diagonally
Serve with chips.

I remember our Woolworth's counter fondly too. It was a special treat to have a real soda fountain drink and a grilled cheese. Love the memory and the recipe.

How cool. I have never had this at Woolworth's but my son's great grandma used to make this for us for lunch all the time. I never got her recipe, but this sounds like I remember. Will definitely be making - and of course you've got to have potato chips ! Thanks wynne.

How funny.... I worked at Woolworths in the mid 60's... One of my first jobs.. Worked the counter and the CANDY counter.. with the roasting nuts! Yummmmy. I love this salad..

Awesome! I worked at Woolworth's in Cosmetics when I was a kid (not too long before they unfortuneately closed), and used to eat at the lunch counter on Fridays when I got paid - great post!
